EDUCATION
Education is in poor state in most areas inhabited by pastoralists due to the historical marginalization that led to limited investments in education infrastructure and insecurity. Some of the challenges the sector faced includes: understaffing, poor enrollment, high number of students dropping out, lack of learning materials, poor infrastructures (classrooms, offices, toilets, water etc) and high rate of adult illiteracy.
Education can be the catalyst required to pull households out of poverty cycle as well as adapting to the changing climate. HARDA plans to support education institutions by providing learning materials and establishing or rehabilitating important infrastructures. The organization will also support training of teachers as well as employing back-up teachers for schools that are understaffed. HARDA will also support adult literacy programs in the pastoral areas and will be involved in civic education and advocacy programs to enable the community to participate in decisions or activities that will determine or influence their socio-economic and political life.
