Sustainable Livelihoods

The primary economic activity of ASAL people is livestock production, however, opportunistic crop production is also practiced around water sources. This type of crop production is crucial in providing balanced diet to the ASAL people and therefore, supplement livestock production. In addition, surpluses can be sold to earn extra income for the households. HARDA works with the pastoral and agro-pastoral communities in sustainable food production and post-harvest management in line with the United Nations (UN) SDG 1 and 2 and vision 2030 by implementing the following programs to contribute to the region’s food security:

  • Animal health programs
  • Livestock feed supplementation during emergencies
  • Livestock breeding
  • Pastoral and agro-pastoral field schools
  • Livestock/agricultural value chains, market and trade strengthening
  • Destocking and restocking programs
  • Dryland farming
  • Alternative livelihood support (Beekeeping, Poultry, Small businesses)
